Step by step how to buy an iPhone activated in stores, then unlock it at home?

I'm really desperate To get the iPhone 3G without a contract. I'm not willing to pay $ 800 – $ 1200 in an unlocked one on ebay when I know I can go into the store to buy the contract and cancel it myself. I just need a boost of confidence and Lil actually do it. I've heard a lot of buzz if you cancel your contract as they would have to pay a charge for parts or something the like, or turn the phone completely. Please someone help me!

The only way I can cancel the contract on the iPhone is its delivery at the time buying and turning to them and then the contract will be canceled. Not before. So I wont be able to keep the iPhone. So the iPhone 3G has failed to release yet.
